This month's article celebrates the birthday of
the United States, with some thoughts about gratitude
for the freedom that we have, no matter where we
live in the world. My many non-USA readers will
find this informative for them, too.

Every country and culture in the world has their
history and their heros, and the more I learn about
them, the more impressed I am with the universal
human spirit and how much we all have in common.
In that history, we all have much to be grateful for.
The United States, like many countries, started
with a rebellion against an existing government.
On July 4th, 1776, a group of 56 men acting on
behalf of the 13 American colonies (later states)
published a document declaring their secession
from England and listing the reasons why they
were doing it.
By doing so they were challenging the greatest
military power in the world at that time and
essentially signing their own death warrant.
They concluded the document this way:
"And for the support of this Declaration, with a
firm reliance on the protection of Divine Providence,
we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our
Fortunes and our sacred Honor."
This was not an idle pledge. They knew what was
at stake. By the time the subsequent war was over,
many of them had indeed lost their possessions and
some their lives.
But here's what made this rebellion different. Let
me repeat the quote from the top:
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all [people]
are created equal, that they are endowed by their
Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among
these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."
This was radical talk in 1776 when many still
believed in the divine right of kings.They stated
that we, the people, had natural rights from God
that government could not abridge, and they
listed three - life, liberty and the pursuit of
happiness.
They went on to state that people create governments
to provide an orderly society in which people can
live lives in freedom, pursuing their own happiness.
Has the USA always lived up to this standard? No,
not always. But this principle has always been
there, reminding us of what is important.
As you look around the world, it is clear that the more
a country honors and expresses life, liberty and
the pursuit of happiness, the more prosperous that
country is. I am very grateful for the sacrifices that
those 56 men ( and many others) made that allowed
me to grow up free to pursue my happiness.
I am sure that no matter what country you live in,
you can find similar things to be grateful for. We all
benefit from the courageous acts and sacrifices of
others. To the extent that we live our own lives
courageously and in integrity, we will benefit those
who come after us, too.
So we can stand for the truth that all people are
created equal. We are all children of God and
God doesn't play favorites. No favorite country,
no favorite color or race, no favorite gender and no
favorite religion. We are all seekers together on
the path.
We can also stand for the truth that each person is
endowed by the Creator with certain unalienable
rights - and we choose to exercise these rights by
living life fully, joyously and responsibly. We also
honor the right of everyone else to live the life they
choose, no matter how baffling their choices might
seem to us.
We enthusiastically pursue our happiness, not at the
expense of others, but to set a good example of how
life can be fully lived. We don't need the permission of
others to seek our happiness - we already have
permission! And that's something to be really grateful for.
